World Antibiotic Awareness Week – November 18-24, 2024
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial agents. As a result of drug resistance, antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents become ineffective and infections become difficult or impossible to treat, increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death.
The World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) is a global campaign to raise awareness and understanding of AMR and promote best practices among One Health stakeholders to reduce the emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections. WAAW is celebrated from 18-24 November every year.
The theme for the World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) 2024 is “Educate. Advocate. Act now.” This theme was chosen based on feedback from an online survey among stakeholders from the human, animal, plant, and environmental health sectors, which collected nearly 200 responses globally.
GP Care Wakefield
Child feeling unwell when your GP surgery is closed?
Appointments are still available on evenings and weekends if you need one; that’s the message from local GP surgeries as children head back to school across Wakefield. Simply call your GP practice number as usual, and your call will automatically go through to GP Care Wakefield, Wakefield’s evening and weekend GP service.
GP Care is staffed by local GPs and nurses and is open for same-day appointments and advice every Monday to Friday, 5pm to 9.30pm, Saturdays 9am to 5pm, Sundays 9am to 1pm and on bank holidays, 9am to 3pm. Outside these times, call 111 or 999 for life-threatening emergencies.
Children who could benefit from extra support to manage their symptoms this winter may also be referred to a new children’s observation hub after their appointment. Staffed by local GPs and nurses, the hub team helps parents and carers monitor their child’s symptoms safely at home, providing advice, assessments and reassurance by phone, video and in-person to avoid unnecessary hospital trips and help youngsters get better at home.
If you are the parent or carer of an ill child eligible for care in the hub this winter, your GP or nurse will give you further information at your appointment.

PRESCRIPTION INFORMATION
Paper requests for repeat prescriptions are being discouraged, again to avoid the spread of the virus.
If you are not registered for Electronic Prescribing Service (EPS) please contact the surgery to nominate your chosen pharmacy to collect from.
In the first instance you must order your prescription via the NHS App. If you haven't already done so please download the App and follow the instructions to register. This will enable you to request your medication, view medical history, book an appointment and seek out advice.
If you're unable to download the NHS App you can email requests to:

- prescriptions.southhiendleysurgery@nhs.net - FOR SOUTH HIENDLEY PATIENTS
IMPORTANT - To all our Military Veteran Patients and their Families: 21.03.2022
As a practice we are actively seeking to identify our Military Veteran patients who have served in the UK Armed Forces and any family members of Military Veterans to ensure they receive any support they may need.
This includes all Military Veterans and Reservists. You only have to have served one day in the Armed Forces.
We are sending out Questionnaires via text message for Military Veterans or their immediate family members, so watch out for these. They are very simple to complete.
Our local group of practices will be working together in the future to help offer tailored support as well as signposting to other services for our Military Veterans and their Families.
Thank you for your cooperation with this piece of work.
Training Practice
The practice is an approved training practice for GP Registrars, Foundation Doctors and Medical Students. All students have a comprehensive education programme and are supervised in their clinical work.
Dr Kate Hemingway and Dr Trudi Cherry are approved GP Trainers and lead education in the practice. Additional members of the clinical and non-clinical team participate in teaching and training throughout the year.
Student Nursing placements take place at the practice throughout the year, with training provided by our Nurse Mentors.
The practice also hosts First Contact Physio trainees, who are qualified physiotherapists and are able to provide a service to our patients.
We would like to thank all of our patients who see those colleagues, who are training and gaining experience within the practice. It is vital for their development and is helping to build the future NHS workforce.
